Herdsmen: Need for a new approach In Delta State

Nigeria is a multi cultural, with different religious beliefs. Since the coming of President Mohammed Buhari on May 29th, 2015, Nigeria, and Niger Delta in particular have experience some sort of undue hardship coupled with the criminal activities of herdsmen in the region.

The good people of Delta State are not excluded with the continued maiming, killing, Raping, stealing of foodstuffs, and kidnapping for ransom in Agadama, Uhoro, Abraka, Ossissa and environs in Ughelli North, Ethiope East and Ndokwa East Local Government Areas of Delta State.
Farms have been desolate and victims fully denied of their self employment.
Law abiding citizens have been killed by killers Herdsmen. The Urhobos(In Delta state) have wholeheartedly condemned in totality the mayhem including rape committed by these hoodlums. it's an Abomination for an Urhobo man's wife to be raped. it's also an abomination for someone to be beheaded in Urhobo lands.

The Fulani Herdsmen have devalued the daughters and mothers of those communities they have operated.
The planting season in these communities starts from January, February, March and end in April, while harvesting starts from May and June because of the raining season. Though they always experience flooding of farm lands and the herdsmen usually leaves because of the water and returned after the raining season with lots of cattle and arms to kill and commit all sort of atrocities. These farmers are into cassava, sweet potatoes, groundnut and other farm produces. The ethnic militia posing as herdsmen, always collect huge amount of money from farmers before given the permission to sell the fishes in the river and most time collect #100, 000 and about depending on the size of the river. Farming are the main occupation there.

The herdsmen are gone but not forever, as it is the raining season again and the people are busy harvesting what is left in their crops destroyed by these killer herdsmen. Herdsmen take their cattle to farmlands and destroy crops after attacking the people, as economic life has dropped considerably.

In recent times, the Police in these areas have done their best to curtail their activities. The killings started in February 12th, 2012 with the killing of Dj Ajawo in Agadama, in 2013 three persons were killed in same Agadama, among whom was a pastor. Many people were also killed in Ohoro and the killings keep increasing by the day. Annually, more than 10 women are been raped and criminal road blocks are common with these Herdsmen.
The question begging for answer, is what are the plans of federal government to stop the rampaging killer herdsmen, after the raining season, because according to reports, farmers in Ughelli North, Ethiope East and Ndokwa East Local Government Areas are living in fear.

However, the Delta State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Zanna Ibrahim have promise to check herdsmen menace in the state and the member representating Ethiope East at the State House of Assembly Mr. Evance Ivwurie has done beautiful job so far. The development, which has dislocated socio-economic life in the affected communities, has triggered food shortage in the oil-rich state. Prices of agricultural products such as garri, plantain, yam, okro, melon, cassava, sweet potatoes, groundnut, maize-corn, sugar-cane and vegetables have shot up beyond the reach of the average salary earner/ family.
