The National Sports Commission passes second reading.

The National Sports Commission Bill is Sponsored by Senator Obinna Ogba.

The National Sports Commission Bill (SB.158) went for second reading on 16th November, 2016.

The Bill seeks to establish the National Sports Commission to be charged with the responsibility of administering, encouraging and developing sports and games throughout Nigeria.

This National Sports Commission Bill could not have come at a better time than now to give legal backing to this important Commission to help rejuvenate the Nigerian Sports Industry so as to make it serious business.

This NationalSportsCommissionBill has no financial implication, the Commission has been off and on, the structures and everything it takes for its take off are available at the Ministry of Sports and Youth Development.

The functions of the Commissions include:
1. To encourage the development, organisation & participation in sports in Nigeria.
2.  To co-ordinate and integrate efforts to raise the standard of performance in sports throughout Nigeria.
3. To organize, assist financially or otherwise the participation in sports at inter-state, national and international levels.
4. To provide and maintain sport centres and facilities for the training of Nigerians as instructors and organizers of Sports.
5. To conduct and encourage research into all matters relating to sports.

The National Sports Commission Bill seeks to change Nigeria's sports to bring them in-line with international best practices, especially in the areas of Sports administration, global competitions as well as welfare of footballers and athletes generally.

The NationalSportsCommissionBill was referred to the Committee on Sports and Youth Development for further legislative action.
