HBO Hackers Demand $6 Million For Ransom
A group of hackers known as "Mr.Smith" posted a fresh cache of stolen HBO files online Monday, and demanded a $6 million ransom from the network to prevent the release of entire television series and other sensitive proprietary files.
"Mr.Smith" published the stolen files on Monday detailing the scripts from five 'Game of Thrones' episodes, including one upcoming episode. The stolen files also included emails allegedly from HBO's Vice President for Film Programming Leslie Cohen and internal documents of legal claims against top executives.
In the video directed to HBO CEO Richard Plepler, 'Mr. Smith' used white text on a black background to threaten more leaks if HBO does not comply with their demands. The hackers demanded "our 6 month salary in bitcoin" which is roughly $6 million in order to stop the leaks.
“Game of Thrones,” currently in its penultimate season, is reported to be the most popular show in HBO’s history. This is the second time the hackers published stolen files. They first started posting stolen HBO files on July 3.
