‎Many people feared killed in Delta communal clash

Governor Ifeanyi Okowa on Monday lamented renewed hostilities between Igbide and Okpolo-Enwhe communities in Isoko South Local Government Area of Delta State.

The Governor warned that the government will deal decisively with perpetrators of the renewed violence as the leadership of the warring communities had signed an undertaking to end a six months old crisis last year and maintain law and order in their communities.

Hostilities broke out in the communities on May 6, 2016 after over 40 years of legal tussle, resulting in the death of several people and burning of over seven houses in the areas.

It will be recalled that on Sunday Igbide attack Okpolo-Enwhe and so many lives were lost and properties worth millions of Naira were distructed.

In a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Charles Aniagwu, the governor condemned in totality the renewed violence despite governments’ effort in resolving the protracted land dispute.

The statement read in part: “The attention of the Delta State Government has been brought to the renewed hostilities between Igbide and Okpolo-Enwhe communities in Isoko South Local Government Area. Government is seriously worried by the intensity of the renewed attacks on both communities which have culminated in wanton loss of life and properties”.

The governor regrets the displacement of families, businesses and directed security agencies to promptly investigate and ensure the prosecution of the culprits in the renewed communal clashes in Igbide and Okpolo-Enwhe, where several lives were reportedly lost.

Governor Okowa condoles with those who lost their loved ones in the violence and commiserates with the government and people of Isoko South Local Government Area over the unfortunate incident.

Meanwhile a source in the community said the disputed land belong to Igbide, the land host a oil well and a fishing river which are source of living for the community

The Igbide people who are believed to come from Ibo and were given a wife and land than settled down in the present Igbide for over hundreds of years.

He advise the government to take proactive measures before the crisis spread to other quarters of Enwhe.
